Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: general adj., state n.
Etymology: In α. forms < general adj. + the plural of state n.; in β. forms < the plural of state n. + general adj. In sense 1 after Dutch staten generaal (16th cent.). Compare post-classical Latin Status Generales (1587 in a British source, with reference to the Netherlands). In sense 2 after Middle French etats generaux, French états généraux (c1493). Compare post-classical Latin Status Generales (1569 or earlier with reference to France).

1. In the Habsburg Netherlands until 1581, and subsequently in the United Provinces of the Netherlands until 1795: a legislative assembly representing the three estates, i.e., the clergy, nobles, and commons.Distinguished from the States Provincial, or legislative assembly of each of the Provinces. Since the end of Napoleonic rule in 1814, the term Staten-Generaal has been used to denote the Parliament of the Netherlands.

Its last sitting, in 1789, ended in dispute, with the Third Estate (or ‘Communes’) forming themselves into the National Assembly, an act which led to the Revolution.
