Etymology: < staddle n. (see forms at that entry). Compare stathelfast adj., and also stedill v.In Old English the prefixed form gestaþelian (compare y- prefix) is more commonly attested (in senses ‘to fix, build, found, establish, to make firm, strengthen, restore’), and survives into early Middle English (as istaþele ) in late copies of material of Old English composition; compare:a1225 ( Ælfric's Homily De Duodecim Abusivis (Lamb. 487) in R. Morris Old Eng. Homilies (1868) 1st Ser. 115 Ðes kingges rihtwisnesse arereð his kine setle and his sodfestnesse istaþeleð [OE Corpus Cambr. 178 gestaþelað] þes folkes stere. Compare also astaþelian to establish, to repair (compare a- prefix1), edstaþelian to restore, rebuild (compare ed- prefix; more frequently attested in prefixed form as ge-edstaþelian to restore, renew, re-establish).
Obsolete.
