Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek σταθμός , -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek σταθμός day's journey, stage ( < the stem of ἱστάναι to stand (see stand v.) + -θμος , extended form of -μος , suffix forming nouns) + -graph comb. form; in sense 1 after German Stathmograph (1876 or earlier).
1. An instrument for recording on a roll of paper the varying speed of a railway engine as it travels. rare. Now disused.In quot. 1904 in figurative context.
