Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin staticē.
Etymology: < classical Latin staticē plant with astringent properties sometimes associated with thrift (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek στατική , use as noun of feminine of ancient Greek στατικός causing to stand still (see static adj.), in Hellenistic Greek also astringent.
1. A plant with finely divided leaves, perhaps the annual buttercup Ranunculus sceleratus, native to damp habitats in Eurasia and North America. Obsolete. rare.
