Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin addīcent-, addīcēns, addīcere.
Etymology: < classical Latin addīcent-, addīcēns person who addicts or authoritatively transfers a thing to anyone (2nd cent. a.d. in legal use), use as noun of present participle of addīcere (see addict adj.).
Roman Law. Obsolete. rare.
A person who hands over (a thing or a person) in accordance with a judicial decision (see addict v. 1).

1880 J. Muirhead tr. Ulpian Rules xix, in tr. Gaius Institutes 398 Cession..is accomplished by [co-operation of] three persons,—the cedent, the vindicant, and the addicent [L. addicentis]. It is the owner that cedes; he to whom the thing is ceded vindicates; the praetor addicts.
