Nautical an instrument for locating the position of the observer on a map or chart by measuring the two angular separations of three objects of known positions.A station pointer typically consists of a circular scale marked in degrees at the centre of which are pivoted three arms, one fixed and two adjustable. The two adjustable arms are set to the two measured angles, and then placed on a map with the three arms passing over the three objects; the centre is then the observer's position on the map.
