Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: star n.1, system n.
Etymology: < star n.1 + system n. With sense 2 compare German Sternsystem, Sternensystem (both 1755 or earlier).
1. Originally Theatre; later chiefly Film. The practice of engaging and vigorously promoting star actors or other entertainers in leading roles. Cf. starring n. 2b.Now frequently with reference to the Indian film industry.
