Etymology: < star n.1 + flower n. Compare German Sternblume (16th cent.), denoting any of various plants with stellate flowers (originally one of the genus Aster). Compare earlier star of Bethlehem n.
1. Any of various plants with bright stellate flowers, esp. those of the genera Ornithogalum (family Asparagaceae) or (U.S.) Trientalis (family Primulaceae). Occasionally with distinguishing word. In botanical works, often glossing the names Stellaria and Aster.
