Etymology: < stargaze v. + -y suffix1 + pie n.2, apparently so called because the heads of the fish stick out through the crust as though gazing at the sky (compare quot. 1864 at β. ).In α. forms with remodelling of the first element after starry adj., probably in order to create a rhyming compound. The β. forms additionally show remodelling after gaze v.
Originally English regional (Cornwall).
A kind of fish pie traditionally made in Cornwall, typically with pilchards, having the heads of the fish sticking out through the crust.
