1. derogatory (chiefly U.S. regional (southern)). Designating a person regarded as low, cowardly, or contemptible; esp. (in the southern United States) designating a northerner (sometimes spec. a New Englander). Cf. yellow-bellied adj. 2.From the mid 19th cent. sometimes with punning reference to the blue uniforms worn by Union soldiers; cf. blue belly n. (b).
