Etymology: Apparently a transferred use of sticky n., on account of the Official IRA's continued use of adhesive backing for their Easter lilies (see Easter lily n. 2), as opposed to the pin badges used by the Provisional IRA.Easter lilies form a focus of identity for some Irish republican organizations, so the Provisional IRA's change of design was a symbolic gesture. An alternative suggestion that the name alludes to the Official IRA's loyalty to the existing organization, from which the Provisional IRA had split away (compare to stick with —— 1 at stick v.¹ Phrasal verbs 2, etc.) appears to be secondary.
