Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Steinheim.
Etymology: < Steinheim an der Murr, the name of a town north of Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, where the fossil was found in 1933. Compare Heidelberg n.
Palaeontology.
Used attributively with reference to an extinct hominid known from a Middle Pleistocene fossil skull found close to the River Murr at Steinheim, Germany, and dated to between 350,000 and 225,000 years ago.Originally named Homo steinheimensis, but now usually classified as H. heidelbergensis or as an archaic form of H. sapiens.
