Etymology: < the name of Sir George Frederic Still (1868–1941), English physician, who first described the disease in 1896 ( Med.-Chir. Trans. (1897) LXXX. 47).
Pathology.
A condition affecting children, characterized by arthritis and ankylosis and now believed to be a form of rheumatoid arthritis.

1905 Lancet 27 May 1424/2 Though Still's disease was of the nature of a multiple joint affection no changes in the bones or the cartilages were observed.

Infancy & Childhood xxiii. 596 In some children the changes in and around the joints make up almost the entire clinical picture, but more often there is an accompanying lymphatic reaction, as shown by enlargement of the superficial lymphatic glands and enlargement of the spleen (Still's disease).
1974 A. Henry in R. M. Kirk et al. Surgery xv. 303 Rheumatoid arthritis occurring in childhood (Still's disease..) is probably not a separate entity.
