单词 stern-sheet
释义

stern-sheetn.

Etymology: < stern n.3 + sheet n.2; compare stern-shoots n.The parallel of fore-sheet n., which is however comparatively late, suggests that sense 1 is original, and senses 2, 3 secondary with the general signification ‘the place from which the mizen-sheets are controlled’. But historical evidence is lacking, and it is not impossible that some other meaning of Old English scéat is the basis of senses 2, 3.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈstern-sheet.
