Etymology: < post-classical Latin sub specie mortis (1730 or earlier) < classical Latin sub (see sub- prefix) + speciē , ablative of speciēs species n. + mortis , genitive of mors (see mort n.1). Compare earlier sub specie aeternitatis adv., sub specie temporis adv.
