Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, cellarer n.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + cellarer n., after either post-classical Latin subcellerarius (11th cent.; frequently from 12th cent. in British sources) or Middle French, French †souscelerier (1346). Compare sous-cellarer n. at sous- prefix 1, and compare also southcellarer n.
Now chiefly historical.
An assistant to the cellarer in a convent or monastery, typically supervising the provision of food and drink; an under-cellarer.
