Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sub- prefix, chantry n.
Etymology: Probably < sub- prefix + chantry n., after sub-chanter n. Compare Middle French soubz-chantrerie (1482).
Christian Church (chiefly Scottish). Now historical and rare.
The benefice or office of a sub-chanter. In later use also: the official residence of a sub-chanter. Cf. sub-chanter n.
