strathspeyn.

Brit. /straθˈspeɪ/, U.S. /stræθˈspeɪ/

Etymology: < Strathspey (Scottish Gaelic Srath Spé , lit. ‘Spey valley’; compare strath n.), the name of a river valley in the Highlands of Scotland (Inverness-shire and Moray).Compare the following, which has sometimes been interpreted as an earlier example of this word; however, what is transcribed here as Stravetspy has also been read as ‘strive to essay’ (by G. S. Emmerson 1972, in Soc. Hist. Sc. Dance XI. 173):a1653 Z. Boyd in G. Neil Biogr. Sketch Z. Boyd (1832) App. p. xxxi/1 To please the king, the Morice dance I will; Stravetspy; and after, last of all, The drunken dance I'le dance within that hall. The place name is attested in English contexts from the 17th cent. or earlier; compare also (in a Latin context) the apparently Scots form Straithspay (1554).
