Etymology: < ancient Greek στρατός army (see note) + -cracy comb. form. Compare post-classical Latin stratocratia (1671 or earlier), French stratocratie (1689 or earlier).Ancient Greek στρατός is cognate with or formed similarly to Sanskrit stṛta , Avestan stərəta , both in sense ‘overthrown’ < the Indo-European base of Sanskrit stṛṇoti he overthrows, post-classical Latin sternere to overthrow (compare discussion at stratum n.) + the Indo-European base of -ed suffix¹. The sense of the Greek word probably developed from the concept of a hostile army as requiring to be overthrown. Compare also (with negative prefix: see un- prefix¹) Sanskrit astṛta, Avestan astərəta, both in sense ‘invincible’.
