Etymology: < stratum n. + -ose suffix1. Compare occasional earlier examples of a homonym relating to clouds ( < stratus n. + -ose suffix1), e.g.:1823 E. James Acct. Exped. Pittsburgh to Rocky Mountains I. 489 There were a few broken cumulo-stratose clouds from the southwest, otherwise the sky was clear.
