A type of echo (echo n. 8) by which a player indicates the possession of three trumps to his or her partner.

1885 Field 21 Nov. 714/3 When you have three trumps, show that fact to your partner..by echoing... To this deferred answer to a demand for trumps, I have given the name of the Sub-echo.
1892 Field 18 June 942/1 [In whist] the sub-echo is the showing of three trumps when a partner has led and called for them. This is accomplished by echoing in the usual manner.
1902 L. Leigh & E. Bergholt Princ. & Pract. Whist 477 A player denies the holding of four trumps when he fails to echo upon the first opportunity; if he does so upon the next he announces the possession of three trumps. The signal under the latter circumstances is termed the ‘sub-echo’.
