Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans boerboel.
Etymology: < Afrikaans boerboel (20th cent.) < boer farmer, Afrikaner (see Boer n.) + boel bulldog, (informally) dog, alteration of bul- (in bulhond bulldog, mastiff, Dutch bulhond (17th cent.) < bul bull n.1 + hond hound n.1).The form boerbull shows remodelling (within English) after bull n.1 (compare bull n.7).
Originally and chiefly South African.
A large sturdy breed of dog of the mastiff type, originating in rural South Africa, probably as a cross between various European breeds and indigenous African dogs; a dog of this breed.
