Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin stupefacientia, plural (1571 or earlier), use as noun of neuter plural of classical Latin stupefacient-, stupefaciēns (see below); as adjective < classical Latin stupefacient-, stupefaciēns, present participle of stupefacere stupefy v.Compare the following earlier use of post-classical Latin stupefacientia in an English context:1575 J. Banister Needefull Treat. Chyrurg. f. 136 Stupefacientia. These doe stupefacte or astonishe the members by putting the substaunce of the spirite into a colde complexion.1657 tr. P.
