Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, prefecture n.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + prefecture n., after French sous-préfecture (1697 as †soûpréfecture in an apparently isolated attestation in the passage translated in quot. 1698, denoting an administrative unit in the Holy Roman Empire; 1800 denoting an administrative unit in France and subsequently also in French overseas territories). Compare classical Latin subpraefectūra (attested in an inscription). Compare earlier sub-prefect n. N.E.D. (1914) indicates the stress as subpreˈfecture.
A division of a prefecture; an area under the jurisdiction of a sub-prefect.
