Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: subject n., -ile suffix.
Etymology: < subject n. + -ile suffix, probably after French subjectile (1829 or earlier).

The material on which a painting, engraving, etc., is made. Also figurative.Apparently rare in the early 20th cent. Subsequently more frequently figurative with reference to Derrida's use (cf. quot. 19981).
