Etymology: < strong adj. + house n.¹ N.E.D. (1919) also included a subsense based on the following quotation, which shows an error for longhouse , the self-designation (in English) of the Iroquois Confederacy (see longhouse n. 2b and compare Five Nations n. at five adj. and n. Compounds 2). This sense is also occasionally found in later sources based on Barton's work, but was apparently never used independently:1797 B. S.
