单词 stupendious
释义

stupendiousadj.

Brit. /stjuːˈpɛndɪəs/, /stʃuːˈpɛndɪəs/, /stjᵿˈpɛndɪəs/, /stʃᵿˈpɛndɪəs/, U.S. /st(j)uˈpɛndiəs/
Forms: 1500s stupendyous, 1500s–1700s stupendious; nonstandard 1800s– stupendious, 1800s– stupenjious, 1800s– stupenjous, 1900s– stupendjious, 1900s– stupendjous, 2000s– stupendjus.
Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Perhaps partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Latin stupendus ; stupendous adj.
Etymology: Originally irregularly < classical Latin stupendus (see stupendous adj.), after adjectives in -ious suffix; compare tremendious , variant of tremendous adj. In some later instances perhaps a typographical error for stupendous adj., or an alteration of that word after adjectives in -ious suffix (compare e.g. grievious , variant (frequently criticized in usage guides) of grievous adj.).
Now rare (nonstandard after 18th cent.).
Amazing, extremely impressive; very large or great; extraordinarily good or pleasing; = stupendous adj.More common than stupendous until the early 18th cent. Cf. also stupenduous adj. Some later instances may show a typographical error for stupendous.
