Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin stuprāt-, stuprāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin stuprāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of stuprāre to have illicit sexual intercourse with, to violate the chastity of, to defile < stuprum (see stupre n.). Compare slightly earlier stupration n.Compare Middle French stuprer (1500; rare), Italian stuprare (14th cent.), and (with prosthetic vowel) Catalan estuprar (15th cent.), Spanish estuprar (early 16th cent.).
1. transitive. To rape (a woman or girl, in early use esp. one who is a virgin); to violate or degrade sexually. Obsolete. In quot. 1893 at this sense and quot. 1893 for stuprated adj. at Derivatives, used with reference to rape of a man.
