Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, distichous adj.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + distichous adj., after scientific Latin subdistichus (1762 or earlier in botanical use, 1777 or earlier in zoological use). Compare slightly earlier subdistich adj.
Botany and Zoology.
Nearly or approximately distichous; (in later use) esp. (of leaves) arranged in two nearly opposite rows.
