Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin subdistinction- , subdistinctio ; sub- prefix, distinction n.
Etymology: Partly (i) (especially in sense 1) < post-classical Latin subdistinction-, subdistinctio pause in speech, mark of punctuation placed at the bottom of a letter, comma (4th cent.), secondary distinction (4th or 5th cent.) < subdistinct- , past participial stem of subdistinguere (see subdistinguish v.) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1, after Hellenistic Greek ὑποστιγμή hypostigma n. at hypo- prefix 2; and partly (ii) < sub- prefix + distinction n. Compare subdistinguish v.
