Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin subditus.
Etymology: < classical Latin subditus situated beneath, subject (to authority), in post-classical Latin also (noun) subject, vassal (Vulgate), use as adjective and noun respectively of past participle of subdere to place under, to make subordinate < sub- sub- prefix + -dere to put (see do v.). Compare Middle French subdit, noun (a1400, rare), and also (as adjective and noun) Spanish subdito (13th cent.), Portuguese subdito (14th cent.), Italian suddito (13th cent.).
