Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu ṣūbadār; Persian ṣūbadār.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu ṣūbadār (also pronounced with /æ/ in the second syllable), and its etymon (ii) Indian Persian ṣūbadār < ṣūba subah n. + -dār-dar suffix.
1. In South Asia: the governor of a subah (subah n. 1), a viceroy; (also) a commander in charge of a town or region. Now historical.
