单词 subitane
释义

subitaneadj.n.

Brit. /ˈsʌbɪˌteɪn/, U.S. /ˈsəbəˌteɪn/
Forms: late Middle English subitan, late Middle English subitaun, late Middle English 1600s–1700s 1900s– subitane; also Scottish pre-1700 subitan, pre-1700 subitane, pre-1700 subytan.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin subitāneus; Latin subitanus.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin subitāneus (see subitaneous adj.), or perhaps < post-classical Latin subitanus (5th cent.), alteration (with suffix substitution: see -an suffix) of classical Latin subitāneus . Compare Old French subitein , Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French †subitain sudden (1155; obsolete in the standard language since the early 17th cent., but still in regional use in a specific sense development ‘touchy’), also Italian †subitano (1308). Compare earlier sudden adj.In sense A. 2 after German subitane (19th cent. in this specific sense); compare earlier subitaneous adj. 2. Quot. 1645 at sense B. could alternatively be taken as showing an otherwise unattested noun subitaneness.
