Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish shtos.
Etymology: < Yiddish shtos < Russian štoss , stos (1826 or earlier), probably < German Stoß (although this is apparently first attested later denoting the gambling game: 1904 or earlier; 16th cent. in the sense ‘stack’ of objects, including cards; already in Old High German stōz , Middle High German stōz in the sense ‘push’) < Old High German stōzan to push, to shove (see stot v., and compare stoss adj.).

1975 Way to Play 207/3 Stuss is also known as Jewish faro. It is a simplified form of faro, with a larger percentage in the house's favor.
2003 M. Walsh And All Saints vi. 47 There was different versions of faro, like skin faro, short faro and rolling faro, but east of the Bowery the one most people played was stuss.
