Etymology: < stylo- (in scientific Latin Stylosanthes, genus name ( O. P. Swartz Nova genera et species plantarum (1788) 108), apparently irregularly < ancient Greek στῦλος pillar, post (see styloid adj.) + ἄνθος flower: see anthos n.).

Originally Australian.

Any of various plants of the genus Stylosanthes (family Fabaceae (formerly Leguminosae)), comprising mainly herbaceous and perennial plants native to the tropics and subtropics of America, Africa, and South Asia, and having trifoliolate leaves and yellowish flowers; spec. any of those grown for fodder in northern Australia and other tropical regions.
