Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: Middle French su.
Etymology: < Middle French su (in a single attestation, 1558 in the passage translated in quot. 1568, in which it is unclear whether the word is intended to refer to the animal or the skins), further etymology uncertain; perhaps ultimately < a language of Patagonia (compare Tehuelche soc robe of skins, and the related Selknam so? ripped leather, perhaps misunderstood as denoting the animal from which the skins were taken). Compare slightly later succarath n.In the Middle French text translated in quot. 1568, it is unclear whether the relative clause refers to the animal or the skins.
Now historical.
A carnivorous quadruped described as having a long hairy tail, and said to carry its young upon its back.This animal has sometimes been identified with a ground sloth.

1890 J. Ashton Curious Creatures Zool. 163 Topsell mentions a fearful beast called the Su.
1996 ISC Newslet. (Internat. Soc. Cryptozool.) 12 No. 1. 3/3 Another account related how the Indians dug pits to trap the su, and then kill them with arrows. All of this pointed at the real possibility of surviving ground sloths.
