Etymology: < post-classical Latin subetalis, subbethalis (1363 in Chauliac; compare quot. ?a1425) < subeth (see subeth n.) + classical Latin -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Middle French, French †subethal (1533 in the passage translated in quot. ?1541). For the semantic motivation compare carotid adj.
