Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin sublimator ; sublimate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin sublimator vaporizer (13th cent. in a British alchemical source; earlier (5th cent.) in sense ‘magnifier, promoter’; < classical Latin sublimāt- , past participial stem of sublimāre sublime v. + -or -or suffix), or < sublimate v. + -or suffix.
1. Chemistry. A container or apparatus in which substances are heated in order to sublime them; a sublimer. Cf. sublimatory n.In quot. 1753 figurative.
