Origin: Apparently (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with a borrowing from Latin; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, Latin lingua; Latin sub-, lingua.
Etymology: Apparently < sub- prefix or its etymon classical Latin sub- + classical Latin lingua lingua n., after German Unterzunge (1846 or earlier). Compare post-classical Latin sublingua (see below), French sous-langue (1874 in a translation of the German source translated in quot. 1878, or earlier). Compare earlier sublingual adj., sublingual n.Post-classical Latin sublingua is attested in British sources from the 6th to the 11th cent. in uncertain precise meaning, referring to an area at the back of the mouth or the upper throat, and glossed in Old English by words probably denoting the epiglottis or the sinew situated under the tongue; compare post-classical Latin sublinguium epiglottis (a636 in Isidore; first half of the 11th cent. in a British source). More recently, scientific Latin sublingua is attested in 1844 or earlier denoting the uvula, but it does not appear to be attested in the same sense as the English word.
Zoology.
In certain mammals, esp. lemurs, lorises, and related primates: a (typically cartilaginous) brushlike structure under the tongue.

1878 F. J. Bell & E. R. Lankester tr. C. Gegenbaur Elements Compar. Anat. 553 In many Prosimii and Chiroptera, as also in the platyrrhine Apes, there is a process below the tongue which is sometimes double; this is the so-called sublingua.
1936 Amer. Naturalist 70 22 Pocock has an interesting interpretation..of the sublingua which he claims is a toothbrush used by the animal to keep the teeth of the comb clean.
2005 S. Wolfe-Coote Lab. Primate i. iii. 36/2 A sublingua (or ‘undertongue’) occurs in lemurs and lorises. This is a keratinized (or cartilaginous) structure with a serrated edge.
