Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin sublunaris , -an suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sublunaris sublunar adj. + -an suffix. Compare earlier sublunary n., sublunary adj., sublunar n., sublunar adj.In sense B. 2 probably after subterranean adj. With forms in -ean compare -ean suffix. Quot. 1710 at sense A. alludes ultimately to Galileo's discovery of the moons of Jupiter; the word sublunarians is an interpolation in the English translation (the Italian text has Con quelle stelle c'han trovato in testa ‘with those stars that they have found around his head’).
