Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin submultiplus, submultiplum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin submultiplus (1525 or earlier; also submultiplum, neuter noun) < sub- sub- prefix + multiplus (see multiple n.), translating the differently-formed ancient Greek πολλοστημόριος a number of times smaller (Aristotle). Compare post-classical Latin submultiplex (6th cent.) and French sous-multiple , adjective (1552 in Middle French as souzmultiple ) and noun (1691). Compare earlier submultiplicate adj.
