单词 sukkot
释义

Sukkotn.

Brit. /sʊˈkəʊt/, /ˈsʊkəs/, U.S. /ˌsuˈkoʊt/, /ˈsʊkəs/; The pronunciation with a final /s/ is used by some speakers even when the word is spelt with t.
Forms: 1600s 1800s– Succoth, 1700s– Succot, 1800s Souccoth, 1800s– Sukkos, 1800s– Sukkoth, 1900s– Sukkot.
Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew sukkōṯ.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew sukkōṯ, shortened < biblical Hebrew ḥag hassukkōṯ feast of tabernacles (Leviticus 23:34, Deuteronomy 16:13) < ḥag feast, festival + ha- of the + sukkōṯ , plural of sukkāh sukkah n. Compare Italian sukkot (1637 as †succod , in the passage translated in quot. 1650, or earlier). In the Old Testament and Hebrew Scriptures, an alternative name for the feast is ḥag ha-'asīp (Exodus 23:16, 34:22), lit. ‘feast of ingathering’ or ‘harvest feast’. The pronunciation with first-syllable stress reflects an Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew word; compare Yiddish sukes ( < Hebrew).
Judaism.
A major Jewish festival, beginning on the 15th day of Tishri (Tishri n.) and lasting for seven days, held to commemorate the sheltering of the Israelites in the wilderness and as a harvest festival. Also called Feast of Tabernacles or Feast of Ingathering.Sukkot usually falls in September and October in the Gregorian calendar, and is marked by the erection outdoors of small booths, in which the festival is celebrated (see sukkah n.).
