Etymology: < classical Latin superātiōn-, superātiō fact or state of having the upper hand, dominance, in post-classical Latin also apparent passing of one celestial object by another (1517 or earlier) < superāt- , past participial stem of superāre superate v. + -iō -ion suffix1.With sense 1 compare French supération (1691).
