Etymology: < super- prefix + celestial adj., after post-classical Latin supercaelestis that is above the heavens (Vetus Latina; < classical Latin super- super- prefix + caelestis (see celestial adj.), itself after ancient Greek ὑπερουράνιος : see hyperuranian adj. at hyper- prefix 4). Compare Spanish †sobrecelestial (c1250), Portuguese sobrecelestial (15th cent.; 14th cent. as †sobrecelestriaaes , plural), and also Middle French superceleste (beginning of the 15th cent.), Italian †sopracceleste (14th cent. as †sopraceleste ), Portuguese sobreceleste (15th cent.). Compare slightly later supracelestial adj., and also later subcelestial adj.
