Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin subsellium.
Etymology: < classical Latin subsellium low seat, bench, in post-classical Latin also misericord, seat in a choir stall (1622 or earlier) < sub- sub- prefix + sella seat + -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare Italian subsellio (a1292).In plural form subsellia after the Latin plural form.
1. Roman History. A usually backless seat or bench in a court, amphitheatre, etc. Chiefly in plural.
