Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, spinal adj.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + spinal adj., after French sous-épineux (1612 or earlier as noun denoting the infraspinatus muscle, 1672 or earlier as adjective). Compare earlier infraspinal adj. at infra- prefix 2.
