Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sub- prefix, spinous adj.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + spinous adj. In sense 1 after post-classical Latin subspinosus (1788 or earlier; compare also quot. 1800 at sense 1). In sense 2 probably after French sous-épineux (see subspinal adj.). Compare earlier subspinal adj.
