Etymology: Old English sulh strong feminine, for *swulh , the w being preserved in Kentish Middle English zuolȝ and Old English swulung , Middle English swoling , etc. (see suling n.); ultimately cognate with Latin sulcus furrow. The local variant sillow represents Old English dative singular or nominative plural sylh , sylg . The oblique forms without umlaut (sule , etc.) are represented by forms s.v. sull n.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈsullow.
Chiefly w. and south-western dialect.
