Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin substruct-, substruere.
Etymology: < classical Latin substruct-, past participial stem of substruere to build up from the base, to support by means of substructures < sub- sub- prefix + struere to build, erect (see structure n.). Compare earlier substruction n., substructure n. Compare also earlier superstruct v. and construct v. N.E.D. (1914) gives the pronunciation as (sɒ̆bstrɒ·kt) /səbˈstrʌkt/.
Obsolete.
