Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin subsultus.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin subsultus pulsation, palpitation (1542 or earlier; a1536 in sense ‘spring, leap’) < classical Latin subsult- , past participial stem of subsilīre to jump up, spring up (see subsult v.) + -us , suffix forming verbal nouns. Compare earlier subsultus tendinum n.Post-classical Latin subsultus is found in translations of the medical writer Galen, who uses ancient Greek ἅλμα leap, spring, palpitation, pulsation (see halma n.). Galen attributes the word to Plato in this sense; it is also found in Hippocrates.

Medicine. Now rare.

Intermittent spasm or twitching (of a muscle or muscles); an instance of this; spec. = subsultus tendinum n.
